“Data is the oil of the 21st century.” In the maritime industry, data has also been likened to a “digital nautical chart” \u2014 a foundation that helps enterprises monitor operations, analyze trends, and make timely operational decisions, spanning port operations, shipping, logistics, financial management, and customer development.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In response to this need, Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) has officially put its Big Data System into operation. This marks an important milestone in the Corporation’s digital transformation roadmap, signaling a shift from management based on periodic reporting to an operating model driven by real-time data.<\/p>\n

The launch of the Big Data System is also a concrete step in implementing VIMC’s digital transformation strategy, while advancing the science, technology, and innovation directions set out in Resolution No. 57. Beyond investing in a modern technology platform, VIMC is aiming to build a new management approach in which data becomes the basis for every operational decision and every step of corporate development.<\/p>\n

SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF FRAGMENTED DATA<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In recent years, as VIMC’s port system, fleet, logistics services, and network of member enterprises have expanded, the volume of data across the entire VIMC system has grown substantially. Every day, thousands of transactions, operational indicators, financial reports, customer records, and HR data are generated.<\/p>\n

However, data consolidation has continued to rely mainly on periodic reporting, making the process of updating and analyzing data time-consuming. Meanwhile, maritime and logistics operations demand timely and accurate operational decisions, particularly amid constantly shifting market conditions.<\/p>\n

Every hour a vessel waits for a berth, or every shipment delayed in release, can drive up costs and affect operational efficiency. As a result, strengthening competitiveness requires not only investment in infrastructure, vessels, or services, but also disciplined data governance \u2014 from collection and standardization through to analysis and utilization.<\/p>\n

With this need in mind, VIMC invested in building its Big Data System, aiming to establish a shared data platform across the entire Corporation. Beyond digitizing and consolidating data from member enterprises, the system also lays the groundwork for improving governance quality and supporting operational management and strategic planning on the basis of real-time data.<\/p>\n

BUILDING AN INTELLIGENT DATA FOUNDATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

VIMC has invested in and deployed its Big Data System on a Data Lakehouse architecture. This model combines the storage flexibility of a Data Lake with the governance and query capabilities of a Data Warehouse, enabling the system to simultaneously ingest, store, and process both structured and unstructured data.<\/p>\n

To date, the Corporation has completed its data integration pipelines, automatically connecting member enterprises to the central data lake. Four key data groups \u2014 production output; finance and accounting; customers; and human resources \u2014 have been collected and standardized, forming the foundation for monitoring and evaluating operations across the entire system.<\/p>\n

Drawing on this centralized data source, VIMC has put its Intelligent Operations Center (IoC) into operation, alongside nearly 100 multidimensional reporting dashboards that have been packaged and deployed. These dashboards serve every level of the organization \u2014 from the strategic level (Corporate Governance) to the intermediate level (Management) and the grassroots level (Operations and Monitoring).<\/p>\n

The rollout of the Big Data System has progressively addressed data fragmentation, reduced reliance on manual report consolidation, and shortened information-processing time. By mastering the Data Lakehouse architecture, VIMC has positioned itself on par with multinational corporations and leading regional conglomerates, setting a new benchmark for digital infrastructure in Vietnam’s maritime industry.<\/p>\n

DATA THAT CREATES PRACTICAL VALUE<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most important aspect of a Big Data system lies not in the technology infrastructure itself, but in its ability to generate value for the Corporation’s business operations through data-driven decision making.<\/p>\n

A clear example can be seen in production and customer management within the ports division, where the IoC has integrated and analyzed real-time data on vessel call frequency, vessel turnaround productivity, and cargo mix at each member enterprise. Thanks to intuitive indicators on the operations dashboard, Corporate leadership has been able to promptly identify operational bottlenecks, proactively coordinate cargo flows, and optimize handling capacity across ports within the same region.<\/p>\n

From a financial and cash-flow management perspective, the automated integration of financial data from member enterprises (DNTV) enables the Corporation to consolidate and analyze a daily, system-wide cash-flow picture. Rather than waiting for end-of-month periodic reports, Corporate management can forecast financial risks early, optimize the cost of capital, and make effective short-term investment decisions \u2014 helping to preserve and enhance the efficiency of capital utilization across the enterprise.<\/p>\n

A FOUNDATION FOR A FUTURE AI ECOSYSTEM<\/strong><\/p>\n

The go-live of the Big Data System and the IoC marks a foundation for VIMC’s next phase of development. The Corporation will continue to expand its scale and enrich its central data warehouse by integrating additional, in-depth data streams covering the supply chain, logistics infrastructure, international freight rate markets, and geopolitical developments.<\/p>\n

In particular, VIMC is focused on developing advanced use cases that combine Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. Machine-learning algorithms will be applied to forecast market demand, optimize fleet scheduling, and conduct in-depth analysis of customer behavior.<\/p>\n

The combination of big data and artificial intelligence is expected to create an intelligent management ecosystem, in which data not only reflects the current state of operations but is also capable of forecasting, issuing early warnings, and recommending optimal courses of action.<\/p>\n

In an industry where cargo turnover speed, market volatility, and cost-optimization demands are continually intensifying, data is becoming a critical competitive advantage. VIMC’s investment in building its Big Data platform reflects the Corporation’s determination to modernize its management approach toward a model that is modern, transparent, and data-driven.
