Saigon port: Steady steps toward the future of Open World

Saigon Port J.S Co., previously Saigon Trade Bureau, has had a progress of development over over 150 years- the progress closely connected to the development of old Saigon-Gia Dinh and then the lovely active HCMC nowadays. Saigon Port is proudly the Heroic Unit in the Renovation Period of Vietnam’s Maritime Sector, the gateway port serving the Southern Key Economic Zone.

Foundation

With the total length of over 3.2km (21 berths) and 27 buoys along the rivers of Saigon, Nha Be, Soai Rap and Thieng Lieng, Saigon Port carries out the important duty of serving the needs of import export cargo worldwide and domestic circulation with the total handling cargo of over 10 million tons per year, accounting for over 50% of general cargo in the area – in which handling amount of steel accounts for 65% and and handling amount of fertilizer accounts for 93% of the HCMC’s market share. In Vietnam port sector, Saigon Port is one of leaders in handling capacity.

Thanks to the advantageous position which is near logistics centers, industrial zones and hitech and industrial zones, as well as supported
by customers, Saigon Port has been serving socio-economic needs of development for a vast area including HCMC, the Southeastern and the Mekong Delta. Saigon Port is capable to provide port and logistics services to customers’ import-export needs for steel, equipment, bulk cargo, container cargo, tug and towage, rescue, mechanical repair, freight forwarding and bonded warehouse leasing etc.

According to the report at the shareholders’ meeting on April 26th, 2019, Vo Hoang Giang – General Director of Saigon Port JSCo. Revealed the company’s cargo throughput in 2018 reached over 9 million tons, with the revenue over VND 1,000 billion.

Future direction

Implementing the master port planning by the Government on Developing Sea Ports of the Southeastern (port group No.5), together with the strategic orientation from HCMC authorities on long-term seaward development, especially the relocation of port cluster on Saigon River, together with the reasonable investment and exploitation of Tan Thuan Port in Dist.7 with key cargo as steel, equipment and container cargo, Saigon Port has built Saigon-Hiep Phuoc Port in Nha Be (HCMC) with 1,800m of berths in the area of over 100ha with warehouse system. The port enables to receive vessels up to 50,000 DWT full- loaded and 70,000 DWT light-loaded, Saigon-Hiep Phuoc Port is the largest general cargo port in HCMC with the capacity of 20mil tons pa, with the total investment of around VND 3,000 bn.
This is the Saigon Port’s wholehearted project to actualize its long-term vision of development for steel, equipment, container cargo, vehicles to meet customers’ requirements in industrial zones, logistics centers in HCMC, the Southeastern and the Mekong Delta. Together with connecting transport systems as North- South Road, ring roads 2-3-4, Ben Luc-Long Thanh Highway, Saigon-Hiep Phuoc.

Port will be a gateway for cargo imported and exported in the South of HCMC, conveniently connect to other ports in HCMC, and provinces in both East and West of South Vietnam or to Cai Mep – Thi Vai deep-water seaport for worldwide destinations.

Besides, Saigon Port has join ventured with other leading international port operators like PSA (Singapore), SSA Maritime Seattle (USA), APMT (Denmark). From 2006, 3 modern deep- water container terminals in the area of Cai Mep – Thi Vai have been built and operated. The terminals – SP-PSA, SSIT and CMIT – have the total length of 1,800m, enabling to receive general cargo vessels upto 165,000DWT and container vessels of 18,000TEUs, with the total capacity of over 3.7mil TEU pa.

With modern technology in cargo handling from global leading port operating partners, and advantages of location, deep draught channel, these terminals have been considered as Vietnam’s top potential international transshipment hubs and national key gateway, serving the economic development of the South Vietnam, the whole country and Cambodia- the neighbor country as well.

Go forward the future of open world

Base on the master plan Seaport Group No.5 by the Ministry of Transport and from the strategic orientation in the period of 2020 – 2030, Saigon Port has focused on projects in the 3 areas:

• Dist.4 – HCMC: building a complex serving local and foreign passengers for tourism purposes in HCMC.

• The area of Dist.7 – Nha Be – HCMC: developing and exploitation general cargo and container port serving local routes, cooperating with strategic partners to install new specialized equipment, improving infrastructures, and managing berths, warehouses and container yards in the direction of modernization; gradually improving management skills and competition abilities in the markets and improving capacity and service quality with customer-centered objective.

• The area of Cai Mep – Thi Vai: completing projects and restructuring JV ports to improve operation abilities and investing in terminal operation management with the objective of being an international regional transshipment hub-ports.

Cooperating with the city in reducing traffic pressures at existing ports and ICDs in the North and the Northeast of HCMC, at the same time maintain and increase cargo volume, Saigon Port offers various choices for Intra-Asia Transport Routes connecting with ports in HCMC, and deep-water ports in Cai Mep – Thi Vai for vessels, container barges via branches of Saigon Port as Tan Thuan Port or Saigon-Hiep Phuoc Port to serve import/export needs in industrial zones in the South of the city and for other provinces both in the Southeastern and the Southwestern. These help to cut remarkable cost and local transport time for customers.
Building Saigon – Hiep Phuoc Port in the Residential and Port Complex, in the future, Saigon Port is gradually changing its cargo structure- from traditional types like fertilizers, chemicals, agricultural products to container cargo, vehicles, equipment in Hiep Phuoc area, gradually forming a vehicles distribution center for the South of Hochiminh City.

With the advanced strategic thinkings from the experienced leaders and high determination from the staff, Saigon Port has reached the target of being the port of leading position in the South supporting professional services of cargo exploitation, ICD, container, Ro-Ro and Logistics.
