Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, speaks at the meeting

According to Official Dispatch No. 203/TB-VPCP dated April 25, 2025, from the Government Office regarding the conclusions of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his working trip with ministries and localities on the investment and development of transport infrastructure in the Mekong Delta region, in Section II, Clause 3, it includes the content: “Request Saigon Newport Corporation and Vietnam Maritime Corporation to study the establishment of a joint-stock company to enhance cooperation in logistics services at Cai Cui Port. Based on that, the Ministry of Construction will coordinate with the People’s Committee of Can Tho and the two corporations to report to Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha for a meeting to agree on decisions and report to the Prime Minister before May 31, 2025.”

According to a report from Can Tho Department of Construction, Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company (a subsidiary of Vietnam Maritime Corporation) is operating Cai Cui Port with two piers, a total length of 365 meters, handling vessels up to 20,000 DWT, and a storage area of 25 hectares. The port serves as a multi-purpose port, handling containers, with a designed capacity of 4.3 million tons of cargo per year, mainly fertilizers, finished steel, imported logs, Honda Vietnam motorcycles, and equipment for large transportation and electricity projects in the Mekong Delta region.

Tan Cang Waterway Transport Joint Stock Company (a subsidiary of Saigon Newport Corporation) operates Tan Cang Cai Cui Port with one pier, 180 meters long, handling vessels up to 20,000 DWT, and a storage area of 8 hectares. The port serves as a multi-purpose port, handling containers, with a designed capacity of 2.44 million tons of cargo per year, primarily handling general cargo and containers.

Overview of the meeting

During the meeting, the leaders of both entities shared an overview of their port operations and services; they also discussed difficulties arising from the frequently silted-up Dinh An – Can Tho waterway, which does not accommodate larger vessels, and expressed a desire to promote logistics development and fully exploit the potential and advantages of this important transport route.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, praised the positive contributions of the two companies in investing in and developing infrastructure and port services in Can Tho in recent times. He affirmed that dredging and recovering products from the Dinh An – Can Tho waterway to allow large vessels to enter the ports of Can Tho and others in the region is essential, helping to improve port utilization and increase the capacity of transportation ports in the area. The Chairman also noted that if the port system is well-invested and meets the demands of businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises in the city, it will benefit them and create momentum for the city’s and the region’s economic development.

Based on the proposals from the two companies, the Chairman asked the relevant departments to provide more information on legal issues, current status, and planning orientations for the two corporations. He also directed the Department of Construction to urgently compile and submit a report to the Ministry of Construction and Deputy Prime Minister for review.
